Post 2780's History

Cherryland VFW Post 2780 was chartered into the Veterans of Foreign Wars on March 25, 1933 with 43 members.  Theodore P. Miller was the first commander, taking office with the installation of the Charter.

From March 1933 to March 1941, Cherryland Post 2780 held their meetings at members' homes.  On March 10, 1941, the membership signed a Warranty Deed with the Knights of Columbus Council 1213 to purchase the property at 440 West Front Street , Traverse City, MI.  Everything inside the building was also purchased, allowing the K of C to rent the building and contents for ten years to hold meetings.

July 2, 1988 was a very special turning point for our membership.  On this date, State Commander Edmund Guewa of Detroit, along with many other comrades and friends, honored us with a visit for the dedication of our new post home at 3400 Veterans Drive, Traverse City, MI.  This new building was made possible by the dedication and hard work of our membership.

In June of 1996, Judith A. Flynn became the first woman to serve as Commander.  She served with the Army Nurse Corps during Desert Storm.

Through all of this, Post 2780 has had seven of its members serve as District 13 Commanders.  They were Otto Kropp, Robert Kaley, Robert K. Smith, Ed Schumacher, Cecil McGoon, Gerald Klosowski, and Jackie Pickard. We also have the honor of being the home of Past Department Commander Cecil McGoon.

VFW Post 2780 has gone from only 43 members in 1933 to almost 900 members in 2001.

Our membership is involved in many local, as well as, national activities.  Some of these include raising over 400 flags On Memorial Day, to a balloon raising in honor of, and in conjunction with, the dedication of the World War II Memorial on the Mall in Washington, D.C., earlier this past year.  The post 2780 Color Guard has also participated in flag raising ceremonies on Flag Day and the Fourth of July.  We have donated uniforms to the Traverse City High School Band and the St. Francis High School Band, as well as flags to various schools and youth organizations.  We have assisted the Young Marines and other worthy groups.  All funds are raised by the membership, and all work is done through the efforts of many selfless volunteers.  The post also holds a children's Christmas party every year.  We have had local and district winners in the Voice of Democracy and Youth Essay Scholarship Contests.  We are involved with Easter Seals, by helping out with their wheelchair clinics, and also as
sponsors and volunteers during the telethon.  We are also active with the Salvation Army by providing bell ringers and food donations.

It has been 67 years of great comradeship and growth, and we look forward to 67 more.
